Farmville NC History
Farmville can trace its history back to the mid-1760's, when early settlers began farming the fertile lands. Incorporated in 1872, Farmville has grown and changed with the times. In 1952, visionary civic leaders created the Economic Development Council, one of the first in the state. Today, Farmville is the second largest employer in Pitt County and about 5,000 residents call Farmville home.
Settled in the 1760s and incorporated in 1872, Farmville began with the farming of eastern North Carolina’s fertile lands. The city prides itself on being a community of the future with small-town charm and big city style. The economy in Farmville is booming and the leaders have responded with innovative ideas that turn growth into a controllable advantage for Farmville. Many of the buildings here date back to the early 1900s, which makes for an impressive downtown. Many homes and businesses are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Recently Farmville was named a finalist in the All-America City competition. Farmville preserves its past while enthusiastically pursuing its future.
Life in Farmville NC
Farmville’s downtown area has maintained its vibrancy and vitality of years gone by. The Paramount Theatre, an art-deco movie house dating back to 1921, has been converted into the home of Farmville’s Community Arts Council.
In 1988, Farmville created the beautifully landscaped Town Common and added the beautiful the Millennium Fountain. The three levels of water represent the past, present and future, and the Fountain symbolizes the community’s commitment to honor the past and shape the future.
Both residents and visitors enjoy the May Museum and Park, which is dedicated to preserving and interpreting Farmville area history. Other recreational opportunities include the Farmville Golf and Country Club. This original “Donald Ross” style course, established in 1935, is nestled among fairways lined with 300 year old oak and cypress trees. Another favorite spot is the Oliver Murphrey Park and Walking Trail. Built after the 1999 flood, this park features walking trails and fitness stations. Farmville also features new monthly art exhibits in the lobby of the historic Paramount Theatre.
Farmville is most known for its annual Dogwood Festival, now in its 21st year, is a celebration of the community and of spring. Children are educated by the Pitt County School System which strives for excellence from their students in a safe learning environment.
