About Grifton
Grifton NC History
Grifton is a small town with a big history, which dates back to the early 1700s when the Tuscarora Indians called Grifton area their home. In 1755 the first settlers came to Grifton naming it Peter’s Ferry. About ten years later it was renamed Blount’s Ford. In 1850 it was given another new name, Bell’s Ferry. In 1883 the town was incorporated under this name and the population was about 75. The town’s name changed one more time in 1889. The town was named Grifton in honor of C. M. A. Griffin, who was a significant landowner and merchant. In 1951 the world’s first polyester plant opened just 3 miles from town, which caused Grifton’s population to reach 510. By 1960 the formerly tiny town’s population tripled. The town became known as the “fastest growing town in the state,” with a soaring population of 1816. In 1971 the town held their first Shad Festival, which became an annual tradition. In the year of 1999 Grifton faced a devastating tragedy. 481 of Grifton’s 2,554 residents died in the “Flood of the Century.” As of 2006, Grifton’s population has slowly climbed back up to 2,476.
